The theft of a friend's priceless, family-legacy Christmas ornaments brings amateur detective and culinary expert, Sadie Hoffmiller, back on the case in a new standalone cozy mystery.
In the latest chapter to the Culinary Mystery series, amateur detective Sadie Hoffmiller continues combining her sleuthing with her cooking and baking to connect with people and gain information she might otherwise not have access to. Moreover, now that Sadie is married to Detective Pete Cunningham, she has a street-savvy husband to test out her crime-solving theories.
With Christmas approaching, Sadie is preparing for a large blended-family gathering—including many new grandchildren—in their home in Fort Collins, Colorado. Even with the festive chaos, Sadie drops everything when word gets out that her friend, Mary, is the victim of a holiday robbery.
At ninety-four years old, and nearly blind, Mary knows this is may be her last Christmas and the last year to enjoy her family heirloom Christmas tree ornaments. She wants just one more holiday to display her ornaments and following Christmas Eve Mass, she'll pass them on to her great-granddaughter, Joy. Though priceless to the family, the collection has been valued at $40,000, and the Christmas tree in the care facility has never looked so good. But before the ornaments can be retrieved by Mary, eleven of the most expensive ornaments are stolen.
A holiday Christmas caper might be new to Sadie, but she's ready to mix in her seasoned crime-solving skills with a pinch of new holiday recipes.

Five years after solving the last of a dozen puzzling mysteries, Sadie Hoffmiller helps a dying friend find peace at her final Christmas. Since surviving a near-death experience at her nuptials (Wedding Cake, 2014), Sadie's lived happily with her investigator husband, Pete, in Fort Collins, Colorado. With Pete away in Phoenix, Sadie stresses over Christmas plans that will include the children from their blended marriage, all expected for the holiday along with a big snowstorm. Even so, she's not too busy to spend time with her dear friend and former neighbor Mary Hallmark, who is in a nursing home after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is also almost completely blind. Mary has asked Sadie to retrieve her ornaments from storage to hang on what she knows will be her last tree, one that her great-granddaughter, Joy, found for her. Sadie's arrival with cookies for Mary and the staff is quickly followed by that of Mary's daughter, Ivy, with whom she has a rocky relationship. Sadie continues to smooth their little quarrels in hopes that they'll make peace before Mary dies. As Sadie helps Mary trim the tree, she's shocked to realize that the ornaments Mary has had since she was a child are rare and valuable. Despite her love for them, Mary is leaving them to Joy, and she wants the girl to sell them for money to go to college. Sadie, a former schoolteacher and private investigator, has been seeking ways to protect the ornaments from harm, and when Joy calls to tell her some of the ornaments are missing, Sadie goes into sleuthing mode in order to find them and save Mary's Christmas. The suspects include staff, visitors, Ivy, and even Joy's boyfriend, Frank, who has an arrest record and was in Mary's room the night of the disappearance. In between worrying about one storm and baking up another, Sadie finds time to solve the mystery. The joys of Christmas and family almost overwhelm a warmhearted mystery.

Sadie and Pete Hoffmiller have been married for five years now, and they hope their children and grandchildren from their blended family will make it to Fort Collins, CO, for Christmas. When she isn't baking, Sadie is also spending time with their beloved nonagenarian neighbor Mary, now in an assisted-living home. When some of Mary's family heirloom ornaments disappear, Sadie slips back into investigative mode and discovers other residents have also reported valuable antiques missing. Equally skilled in the culinary arts and sleuthing, Sadie is determined to stop these thefts. VERDICT Kilpack represents a nice range of ages in this story, and the relationships feel both real and aspirational. The clues and solution are complex enough to keep readers guessing. Recipes are included and also available as a PDF, making this a fun choice for cookbook discussion groups as well as general readers. Twelve previous "Culinary Mystery" titles precede this entry, which can be read on its own.
